FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Our family borrowed a ChromeBook from the school, can we use it over the summer?

Yes!  We are not asking for the ChromeBooks to be returned until school resumes in September.  Please note that the ChromeBooks are owned by the board and the acceptable use agreement remains in place through the summer months.

Our family moved into the area recently; can I register my child(ren)?

Yes!  We strongly encourage new families to register their children as soon as possible so we have the most accurate enrollment numbers when developing class lists for September 2020.  Registration forms are online and can be found at https://www.dsbn.org/docs/default-source/default-document-library/studentregistrationform.pdf

Our family has moved out of the Harriet Tubman area, how do I find out where I should register my child(ren)?

Please click on our School Locator link ( https://www.dsbn.org/findaschool/ ) and enter your new address.  You will be provided with the name of your new home school.  Please contact the school via their general mailbox and someone will contact you.

My child just registered for Year One Kindergarten when will we get more information about September 2020?

All new kindergarten families will receive 2 mailings, one at the end of June and one in August.  You will receive specific information about kindergarten that is specific to Harriet Tubman but also some great board resources to help you prepare your child for kindergarten.  In August you will also receive information that is specific to September start up.  If, at any time, you have questions please do not hesitate to email htb@dsbn.org and one of our staff members will connect with you.

Is Your Child Struggling?

Students may experience a range of emotions during the COVID-19 situation. As well, changes in routine, including time away from school, may create challenges for some students. We also understand that young people with pre-existing mental health problems may find their symptoms increasing in light of the current uncertainties. Below are some links and resources to help you and your child navigate emotionally through these difficult times. As always please reach out to your child’s teacher or one of our admin team and we can help you find supports as well. Pathstone has confirmed that walk-in services are closed indefinitely and individual therapy sessions are continuing to happen over the phone. They have increased the number of staff on the crisis phone line and are still able to respond to calls immediately, without wait times. For immediate support, parents and students may phone the Pathstone Mental Health Crisis and Support Line at 1-800-263-4944. Support from Kids Help Phone can be accessed by calling 1-800-668-6868, texting CONNECT to 686868, or live chatting at www.kidshelpphone.ca. Here are some helpful resources for parents that can be found on the DSBN website at https://www.dsbn.org/coronavirus-updates/ How can I support myself and my family in coping during COVID-19? The National Association of School Psychologists has provided a link with tips for talking to your kids about COVID-19.

2020-2021 BACK TO SCHOOL
STUDENT TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION

Niagara Student Transportation Services (NSTS) will post specific back to school transportation arrangements for each student enrolled, including bus route numbers, stop locations and times.
Please visit www.nsts.ca and sign-in to the secure parent portal to get your child’s student transportation information. To sign-in to the portal you will need your child’s Ontario Education Number (OEN) which can be found on their report card. While signed-in, please subscribe to the delay and cancellation module for direct and timely emails regarding student transportation that impacts your child’s bus route.
Eligibility information is also available through the portal including walking directions if your child lives within the walk zone of the school and is not eligible for transportation service.
Changes to home, pick-up or drop-off addresses must be made through your child’s school. During the summer you may notify NSTS of address changes so we can make sure a bus stop is available for your child to start the school year, however, NSTS is not authorized to change student address information.
With the availability of the secure parent portal, NSTS will not mail student transportation notices with the exception of Kindergarten students or new students to the system who do not have an OEN to sign-in to the portal.
Please contact your school or NSTS if you have questions regarding your child’s transportation arrangements. Phone: 905 357-6787 Website: www.nsts.ca Email: general@nsts.ca
